Matt Vasgersian / Play-by-Play Announcer
The 2007 season marks Matt Vasgersian's (prounounced va-SKER-jin) sixth year as the Padres lead television broadcaster after spending five seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. A 1989 graduate of the University of Southern California, Vasgersian began his baseball career in 1991 in Huntington, WV with the Short-Season Single-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. His ascent through the minors covered a stop at every level of baseball including a Single-A campaign with the Padres in 1992 (High Desert). Vasgersian moved on to Double-A El Paso (Brewers) in 1993-94, Triple-A Syracuse (Toronto Blue Jays) in 1995 and Triple-A Tucson (Houston Astros) in 1996. During the 1995 season, he handled play-by-play on ESPN2's minor league game of-the-week, "Baseball Across America."
An accomplished broadcaster on the national level, Vasgersian currently enjoys a full-time profile with FOX Sports that includes play-by-play with FOX Baseball Saturday and FOX NFL Sunday. His football season culminated this past January with the BCS on FOX, handling play-by-play for the prestigious FedEx Orange Bowl.
Vasgersian also enjoys a national role with NBC Sports as a member of their award-winning Olympic Broadcast team. He was at the microphone for the 2004 Athens Games, handling play-by-play for baseball and softball coverage, and more recently in 2006, announcing Ski Jumping for the Winter Games in Torino, Italy. Additionally with NBC, Vasgersian hosts "The National Heads-UP Poker Championship," now in its third season. Past duties at NBC have included hosting weekends on the "Sun America Sports Desk," "Poker Superstars" and the 2001 Toyota Gator Bowl.
The versatile 39-year-old also lists among his national credits play-by-play with FOX Sports Net's "Baseball Thursday" and FX's "Baseball Saturday Night"; a nightly sports trivia show "Sports Geniuses" on FOX Sports Net; "Celebrity Blackjack" on GSN, and three seasons teaming with NFL Hall-of-Famer Lawrence Taylor on FX's "Toughman World Championship Series." From 2004-06, Vasgersian returned to his alma mater, handling play-by-play for USC Trojans Basketball on FSN West.
