Odds and Ends - May 31
I wanted to start by thanking everyone who has sent in emails or left comments on the blog. We appreciate the feedback.
Yesterday I got an email from Steve who wrote...
You guys keep referring to Kouzmanoff as a "rookie" as he plays for the Padres. At the same time talk about his first major league hit last year with the Cleveland Indians being a grand slam home run on the first pitch. How can he now be considered a "rookie" if he played for the Cleveland Indians last year?
Steve, here is your answer from Page 355 of the Padres Media Guide
A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) Exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) Accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of a 25-man limit (excluding time in military service or time on the disabled list)
I hope that clears that all up for you Steve. Again, thanks for taking the time to write and please keep the questions coming. We are working on an email link where you will be able to email me directly very soon.
I wanted to post a few notes about Chris Young's dominance over the Pittsburgh Pirates after last night's strong start. C.Y.'s career line against Pittsburgh now looks like this.
3-0 0.76 ERA 17 K 5 BB 7 H in 23.2 IP.
That's pretty ridiculous. Here are some other notes.

3-0 0.76 ERA 17 K 5 BB 7 H in 23.2 IP.
That's pretty ridiculous. Here are some other notes.
- Chris has pitched in all or parts of 24 different innings against the Pirates. He has allowed no-hits in 18 of them
- Last night's bottom of the 6th was the first time in Young's career that he has allowed multiple hits to the Pirates in the same inning.
- Of any pitcher with at least 20 innings pitched against the Pirates in this decade, Chris Young has the best ERA at 0.76. Amazingly, under the same criteria, the pitcher with the worst ERA is one of the guys the Padres traded to acquire Young. Adam Eaton. He has a 9.74 ERA against the Pirates over that stretch.

Oh my gosh...even if it's NOT a home run, how do they determine it's only a double? If Bard were to have kept on running after it "bounced" off the railing, might he not have had a triple or even an inside the park home run? What was the determining factor for a double?
By kayowe, At May 31, 2007 7:55 PM
Why is it that Bard's disputed home run was brought back and made into a ground rule double. The Pirates didn't play the ball as if it wasn't a home run. Wouldn't it then be an in side the park home run since Bard was never tagged in case there would be a dispute?
By Emonkey, At May 31, 2007 7:57 PM
Ok if it is not a home run why is it a double. The ball came back into play without being touched. It should be a live ball and correct me if I am wrong...no one ever tagged Josh out.

Hi Mud and Matt!!! Love you guys!! I have a debate going on in a local Pub in Oceaside called Hooligan's. Wondered if you could help?
If a player leaps to catch a ball in FAIR territory and goes over the "fence or wall" while maintaining posession of the ball, is the batter out or is it a homerun? Please help. I've looked through the rules and can't find a definitive answer. Thanks!!!! Go Padres!!! Rian Walker of Oceanside

I am tired of our announcer"s saying how hard these player"s have it in bad weather,Our military people work in bad weather for far less pay and much more chance of injury.

Unbelieveable comeback tonight!! This makes up for that 4 back to back jack night that the Dodgers put on the Padres last year as this was a game the Dodgers had in their back pocket, only to lose it. Too bad Saito was not able to go in this series, as the Padres benefited, no doubt!

Watching FOX sports air the Oakland vs. S.F. and announcer person rattles off tha Bruce Bochy managed the padres of the American League for twelve years. Doesn't Maddy do a little moonlighting on that network?
He needs to give those cretins a "tune-up". Unless Sandy Alderson did some thing I'm not aware of!

So Tremel Sledge just hit a homerun against the Mariners and Matt and Mark call him "Secret Pop". Is it just me or shouldn't it be "Pop Secret"?

Hi guys, I have a question that doesn't pertian to the blog but I don't know where else to ask. I love 4SD Hd broadcast of the Pad ghames but it seems that the volume of the broadcast is somewhat low compaired to the commercials that you air. I find myself having to hold the rrmote to lower the volume at every commercial break. Cox said that it's your broadcast that does this as it doesn't happen on any other HD broadcast on my TV. Can you please answer this question or at least forward it to someone that might know why I have this problem?
Thanks guys.
P.S you guys are great and I really enjoy your commentary.

Production guys, it would be awesome to start an aggressive campaign to get Chris Young voted on into the AllStar Game! Fans need to be pressured all around! Let's get it started! Fans should pressure the Padres marketing department as well! Flood 'em with emails.
Come on now!
