Former Friars Return

If you're watching the game today, you've seen Steve Finley leading off in center field for the Rockies. He's the first player in Major League history to play for every team in a five team division. In this age of player movement, we see familiar faces in strange uniforms all the time. For example, Luis Gonzalez doesn't look right in Dodger blue. And even though Steve Finley has been continuing his tour of the NL West, it's been strange to see him in the various uniforms from around the division. With all the ex-Padres scattered around Major League Baseball, who is your favorite former Friar to see back at PETCO Park?

And if you heard Mud doing his best Karen Carpenter impersonation in the top of the 3rd, I apologize. For all of us.

  • Bring back Dave Roberts. Dirty Dave became a family classic in my home and amongst my friends. He is a Hero for the bosox and a hero for the padres.

    Bring Back Dirty Dave Roberts!

  • My favorite ex-Padre that I'll be seeing is Adam Eaton because it'll remind me of the steal the Padres had with the six man trade with the Rangers.

Mark singing the Carpenters was great. Don't break your t.v.'s folks.

  • Who cares about the players changing teams, they go where the money goes. What I care about is Flan abandoning his so-called city and so-called team. Well I say good riddance.

  • Mud do yourself and your audience a favor and stick to broadcasting , your singing made my cat meow

  • As a former San Diegan and Padres season ticket holder, I've really missed Matt and Mud! I am thrilled that the Channel 4 broadcasts were carried by MLB Extra Innings this weekend so I could enjoy them here in NY (yep! that was me at the Mets games last year waving to Matt and Mudd).

And really, Mudd's rendition of Karen Carpenter wasn't that bad! It's part of Mudd's charm that makes him so enjoyable. Of course, I like his pitching explanations more ;-)

  • I look forward to Doug Mirabelli's return so I can thank him for his part in bringing Josh Bard and Cla Meredith to San Diego.

  • Oh! and former Padres? Xavier Nady of course! I'll be there in September when the Pirates are in town to see the X-Man!

  • My favorite former padre is Derek Lee.. Its a shame we had to trade him to Florida!!

  • I feel fans can't really develop a loyal player following since free-agency. Players are jumping ship and running to the big bucks so fast that their feet don't even touch the ground. There are still old geezers who can tell you from memory the lineups from the Yankees and (Brooklyn) Dodgers from the 30's and 40's from memory, you can't do that today. The only people who really benefit from free-agency are the program sellers. I haven't been to a game since the first strike, and I will continue to stay away, the ridiculous money they are making, and yet they want more.

  • It's good to know they are out there and doing well! I caption some of the Padres games, and I feel like I get to know them so well, and then they leave! It's great when they stay in our division, though, as I can see how they are doing! Go Mud and Mark! And take it easy on me today!

  • Also if you're watching the game today you'll notice for the second day in a row the broadcast team has used day/night average comparisons. Playing a lot less day games are going to skew the numbers a bit in the day games favor. Also, Jason Jennings had another bad outing according to Matt. Since when is six innings of only giving up three runs a bad start? Actually sounds like a quality start to me.

  • It will be great to see Dave Roberts getting down and dirty on the field for the series against the Giants. I miss him but am very happy with the lineup this year and our new coach. GO PADRES!

And Mark's singing was a nice touch today - Matty and Mud make the game alot of fun to listen to if you can't be there in person!!

  • My favorite former Padre is Steve Finley. I have always liked Finley. Love ya Matt and Mark!!!

  • I always like to see Rick Sutcliffe make it back and up in the booth. I like his political insight on seeing what we can do to "fix that thing."

  • My favorite ex-Padre is Tim Flannery. With his hustle, he was the heart and soul of that team in the 1980s. I fear his aggressive style coaching third base will eventually pay off for the Giants.

  • My favorite ex-Padres player coming to town is definitely Steve Finley. Great memories of him with his stellar play with the Padres. And even when he's on an opposing team, he plays his position so well I can't help but applaud him anyways.

And I enjoy when Sutcliffe is in town. His commentary on a pitcher while he's pitching is sometimes uncanny and it felt like we had a bonus with him when he could also pitch some BP to the Padres' hitters.

  • Where is Quilvio Veras and what is he doing now? He was one of the great ones during the late 90's and a huge fan favorite. Q would always give us a wave when we shout Q during the pre-game. Great guy.
